BIOGRAPHIES Ruwantissa Abeyratne Tissa Abeyratne has worked in the field of aviation law and management for over twenty five years. He is currently Acting Deputy Director, Air Transport Bureau, at the International Civil Aviation Organization. He also teaches Aero Politics, Law and Policy at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal in the Global Aviation MBA Programme. Tissa holds the degree of doctor of civil laws (DCL) from McGill University, the degree of doctor of philosophy (Ph.D) from the University of Colombo, the degree of master of laws (LL.M) from Monash University, Victoria, Australia, and the degree of bachelor of laws (LL.B) from the University of Colombo. He has published numerous books and over 300 leading journal articles on international law and air law, in addition to many papers presented to conferences. Some of his latest books are Aviation in Crisis, Air Law and Policy, Aviation and Diplomacy, Aeropolitics, Aviation and the Environment and Airport Business Law. Tissa is a Fellow of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He is also a member of the International Law Association, in which he serves as member of both the Association's International Trade Law Committee and Space Law Committee. He is a founder member of the Montreal Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
Alejandro Piera ALEX PIERA is a Senior Legal Counsel of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He is based in Montreal where he advises member airlines and internal clients on issues relating to international conventions, ICAO relations, aviation security, facilitation, and air transport policy. He represents IATA at (i) ICAO’s Legal Committee; (ii) the Commission of Experts of the Supervisory Authority of the International Registry in the context of the Cape Town Convention; (iii) the Preparatory Commission of the Establishment of the International Civil Aviation Compensation Fund (PCIF); and (iv) the Latin American Civil Aviation Commission (LACAC). He was part of the IATA legal team that participated in ICAO’s Diplomatic Conference that took place in May 2009. Prior to joining IATA, Alex was in private practice for a number of years. He is a graduate of McGill’s Institute of Air & Space Law. |
